TerraSkin: Paper with a Silver Lining

Design and Source Productions, Inc.

Chameleon Packaging, the environmental division of Design and Source Productions, Inc., is pleased to announce TerraSkin, a tree-free eco-paper that has achieved Silver Cradle to Cradle Certification  and was awarded the Silver Sustainable Packaging Award.

From the standpoint of sustainability, TerraSkin fits the bill as an environmentally friendly material while adding value and innovation to any project. Comprised of 80 percent mineral powder and 20 percent nontoxic resin, no trees are used to make TerraSkin.

Also, amazingly, no water is required in the production of the paper. On average, production of TerraSkin requires 50 percent less energy than regular fiber-based paper.  And unlike regular fiber-based paper, TerraSkin has the capability to be infinitely recycled, once the proper infrastructure is established. TerraSkin has been tested and confirmed degradable, with a degradation cycle of 6-9 months, releasing no toxic materials, and can be safely incinerated.

Owing to its source material (calcium carbonate), TerraSkin achieves several unique qualities: a bright shade of white without bleaching, water and tear-resistance without lamination, and general durability. Because TerraSkin repels rather than absorbs liquid, printing requires less ink while producing prints of superb quality using standard offset printing inks and print techniques.

From Art to Soap
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City was one of the first end users to put TerraSkin into use. Since 2006, MoMA has used TerraSkin for gift boxing and packaging needs in its stores.

In 2007, Burt’s Bees partnered with TerraSkin and has transitioned all new soap wrappers to be made with TerraSkin. The project cut material use in half, with added performance characteristics. And, almost one year after achieving Silver Cradle to Cradle Certification, TerraSkin has also won the Silver Award for the Burt’s Bees Soap Wrappers in the International Package category at the Packaging Association of Canada (PAC) 2008 Sustainable Packaging Awards.

Vital Stats
TerraSkin is currently stocked in both New Jersey and California, in thicknesses ranging from 4 pt. to 20 pt., and sizes from 25”x35” to 28”x40” sheets. TerraSkin is also available for various applications exclusively through Design and Source and their certified distributors. Applications include shopping bags, gift boxes, promotional/marketing materials, signage, labels, hang tags, etc.
